Evolution of Textile Arts
Community stewardship includes both honoring the past and safeguarding the future. In many textile communities, age-old traditions merge with new innovations. For our 2022 conference, WARP will bring together speakers from textile communities around the world to discuss questions artisans face in our ever-changing world. This year's meeting is free and open to all to attend. Our program of panel discussions and presentations will be open to the public, and we will also have some "members only" events, such as our Annual Friday night Welcome Circle, a Saturday night celebration of WARP's 30th anniversary, our Annual Business Meeting, and “Breakout Rooms” to have time for conversation. Friday, June 24 – WARP Members Only:
7 pm: Virtual Welcome Circle
Saturday, June 25 – Open to Public:
11:30 am: Keynote Speaker: Lily Hope, Intertwining Community with Reemerging Traditional Materials
12:30 pm: Panel Discussion: Adaptation with Migration. Panel discussion with Artisans Beyond Borders in Nogales, Sonora, Mexico which supports asylum seekers at the US-Mexico border.
1:30 pm: 30-Minute Break
2:00 pm: Afternoon Keynote Speaker: Arushi Chowdhury Khanna, Himroo: Reviving the Lost Weave of Aurangabad
3:00 pm: Panel Discussion: Baskets of the World. Representatives of basket weaving communities from Namibia (OMBA), Guatemala (Mayan Hands), and Panama (Rainforest Baskets).
4:00 pm: Vendor Show & Tell
5:00 pm: 30-Minute Break
5:30 pm: Alice Brown Memorial Scholarship Recipient Presentations
6:30 pm: Panel Discussion: Inspired Fashion Design: Innovation meets Tradition
7:30 pm: 30-Minute Break
Saturday, June 25 – WARP Members Only:
8:00 pm: Celebration of WARP's 30th Anniversary! This virtual party will include a WARP Member Celebration Video, a toast to WARP & special book drawing for attendees, followed by time to socialize in Zoom “Breakout Rooms”.
Sunday, June 26 – WARP Members Only:
10:00 am: Virtual Coffee: Are you a morning person? Socialize in Zoom “Breakout Rooms” while you have your morning coffee!
11 am: Annual Business Meeting - Join the WARP Board of Directors & Executive Director to hear about WARP's exciting activities in the past year, and give us your input.
Sunday, June 26 – Open to Public:
1:00 pm: Panel Discussion: Three young weavers from India, working to revive traditional weaving techniques in their communities.
2:00 pm: Panel Discussion: Organizers in the Guatemala National Weavers Movement, giving voice to Mayan weavers standing up against design appropriation.
3:00 pm: Closing Remarks, followed by optional discussion groups in Zoom “Breakout Rooms.
